Yale was ranked 5th best university in the nation by U.S. News in 2025, maintaining its position from the previous year.Yale is one of several prestigious universities that have come under scrutiny in recent years for their punitive policies around student mental health, often banishing students from campus if they exhibited signs of mental illness. In response to a lawsuit, Yale updated its policy to allow students to take leaves of absences instead of withdrawing, and to allow students to continue receiving health coverage and maintain access to the community.Yale has been hosting the annual <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://dandasymposium.yale.edu/">Symposium for Disability and Accessibility</a> since 2022.

Yale offers a few disability-related courses, but that's it.

As yet, Yale does not offer a Disability Studies Program, but the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://medicine.yale.edu/histmed/events/disability-studies/">Yale Disability Studies Network</a>, based at the School of Medicine, "has petitioned for the formalization of an interdepartmental center for the study and research of disability at Yale," <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2023/04/16/students-advocate-for-official-disability-studies-program/">according to</a> Yale Daily News.Yale offers a few <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://courses.yale.edu/?keyword=disability&amp;srcdb=202503">disability-focused courses</a> every semester, including AMST 2233, Another "Other" – Introducing Critical Theories and Histories of Disability.

Yale Daily News <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2025/04/01/department-leaders-told-to-report-all-dei-initiatives/">reported</a> in April that Yale administrators were evaluating Yale's DEI programs and practices though there were no immediate plans to change those programs. However, in 2024, the Yale Women's Center, a student-run feminist group, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2024/10/15/yale-college-admin-direct-womens-center-to-institute-policy-of-broad-neutrality/">received a directive</a> from the Dean's Office that it would be required to "'maintain broad neutrality' in their programming and actions to 'ensure that all students feel welcome." Part of the Yale administration's recent <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2025/04/01/department-leaders-told-to-report-all-dei-initiatives/">review of DEI programs</a> on campus includes an assessment of whether they “'have the appearance of being limited' to particular identity groups."

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yalewell.yale.edu/faculty-staff-and-families/resources-faculty-and-staff#recognizingstrugglingstudent">Yale Well website</a> offers helpful guidance on how to recognize signs of distress, which can include “difficulty maintaining focus,” “extreme anxiety,” and “withdrawal from routine activities and relationships” -- without resorting to fearmongering or stigmatizing language.

Yale University

<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://defy.sites.yale.edu/">Disability Empowerment for Yale</a> (DEFY), a disability advocacy student organization at Yale, has been trying <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2025/01/23/ycc-renews-push-for-disability-cultural-center/">to establish a Disability Cultural Center</a> to "help address a lack of support for disabled students’ sense of belonging they noticed on campus." However, Yale Daily News <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2025/01/23/ycc-renews-push-for-disability-cultural-center/">reports</a> "they have yet to receive the administrative assistance necessary to create the center."In addition to DEFY, other <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://accessibility.yale.edu/disability-affinity-groups">disability affinity groups</a> on campus include the Graduate Student Disability Alliance and the Disabled Law Student Association (DLSA).Yale has one of the earliest established <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://walden.sites.yale.edu/about-us">student-run peer support groups</a> in the country, which offers both a confidential hotline and walk-in center.

A student writes that, "There is a general lack of elevators and ramps in dormitories."

In 2022, New Haven's Department of Community Resilience <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yaledailynews.com/blog/2022/11/08/new-haven-launches-non-violent-crisis-response-team/">launched a pilot program</a> in which social workers and peer recovery specialists respond to certain 911 emergency calls. Yale also has an on-call mental health clinician to help <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://yalewell.yale.edu/get-help/if-youre-crisis">students in crisis</a>. However, Yale still encourages members of the community to call the Yale Police Department for <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://catalog.yale.edu/handbook-instructors-undergraduates-yale-college/teaching/concernsaboutstudents/index.html">health emergencies</a>.

Harvard University is ranked 3rd among national universities by U.S. News. The oldest and most prestigious university in the United States, Harvard was also ranked 3rd in 2024.The Harvard Crimson reports that inaccessible student housing presents <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2023/9/28/disability-justice-scrutiny/">a persistent barrier</a> for disabled students seeking an inclusive campus experience. "Only two of the 17 first-year dorms (Weld and Thayer) and six of the 12 upperclassman Houses are wheelchair accessible," reports The Crimson. Harvard has published an interactive <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://accessibility.harvard.edu/campus-access">accessibility map</a> on its website, but I found navigating the map to be confusing.A student tells us, "Though there are lots of active resources to support students at my university, I oftentimes feel burdened to ask my professors for help. Even with the resources available at my school, it's at my professor's discretion to decide how to apply my accommodations." The Harvard Crimson <a href="" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported</a> that one student "has switched out of more than 10 courses during her time at Harvard because she sensed that professors were inflexible and unaccommodating." Another student tells us that it's not just the ableism on campus. "Unfortunately, when I think of my personal, adverse experiences with Harvard University, racism comes to mind before ableism, although the organization has its fair share of both."

Harvard offers several <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://admissions.hks.harvard.edu/www/documents/Disability_Courses.pdf">disability-related courses</a>, but no formal program in Disability Studies.

Harvard does not have a Disability Studies program and its course offerings in Critical Disability Studies are scant. Andrew Q. Kang '27, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2024/3/20/kang-harvard-disability-studies/">writes</a> "there is a glaring lack of disability education on Harvard's campus."&nbsp;Harvard does offer some courses involving disability-adjacent topics such as stigma. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://courses.my.harvard.edu/dw_course/fas_crse_cat.pdf">Fall 2025 courses</a> include HISTSCI 1490, The History and Culture of Stigma; and SOC-STD 98VT, Solidarity: Group, Self, Identity.

The Harvard Crimson reported that years before Trump entered the White House, Harvard was already dismantling its DEI programs. "Diversity statements in faculty hires were axed. Key DEI-related positions were left unfilled," <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/5/28/dei-rise-and-fall/">reported The Crimson</a>. References to anti-racism were removed from the website in 2023. "And the upper echelons of Harvard’s leadership, which has long been dominantly white and male, have grown less diverse in recent years," reported The Crimson.This April, the Office for Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at Harvard was renamed the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.harvardmagazine.com/2025/04/harvard-renames-diversity-office">Office of Culture &amp; Community</a>. The Chronicle of Higher Education <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.chronicle.com/article/tracking-higher-eds-dismantling-of-dei">reports that</a> the "Graduate School of Education eliminated its DEI office and laid off its chief diversity officer."

Harvard University

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://hudjclub.weebly.com/">Harvard Undergraduate Disability Justice Club</a> (HUDJ) is "a large coalition of students with chronic illnesses, mental illnesses, and visible/invisible disabilities, as well as allies, dedicated to making Harvard College more accessible."Harvard students have been running a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://camhs.huhs.harvard.edu/links/room-13">peer support group</a> since 1971.

<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2020/1/27/huit-accessibility-protest/">The Harvard Crimson reports that</a> "[a former Harvard University Information Technology employee] said he chose to resign from his job with HUIT because the University has 'no plans' to make the building wheelchair accessible. He said he met with the property manager and building manager multiple times, but they would not add a ramp or elevator to the building."<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2021/10/21/accessibility-on-campus/">The Harvard Crimson also reports</a> that Harvard Yard is "really physically inaccessible" and "a key example of the campus’s hostility to those with disabilities."

Harvard campus does not have an alternative-to-police response team, but the city of Cambridge has been running a Community Assistance Response and Engagement (CARE) Team since 2024. The CARE Team is "a group of unarmed social workers and mental health clinicians, trained to de-escalate without an armed police presence." As The Harvard Crimson <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/4/25/cambridge-emergency-response-programs/">reports</a>, however, the Cambridge Police Department has been actively undermining the alternative response model, reluctant to see its funding diverted to other city departments, and pushing forward with its own co-response system, which involves police.Harvard, for its part, encourages community members to call the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) for <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://camhs.huhs.harvard.edu/find-help-now/help-someone/">students in crisis</a>.

NAGPRA: Harvard still holds the remains of <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://projects.propublica.org/repatriation-nagpra-database/institution/harvard-university/">6,200 Native Americans</a>.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://nocklab.fas.harvard.edu/research">The Nock Lab at Harvard</a> conducts research to detect people who may be suicidal using algorithms to analyze people's social media posts.

Harvard uses <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://reportinghotline.harvard.edu/">NAVEX's EthicsPoint® system</a> "to report a variety of ethical, integrity, safety, security, and compliance concerns." Although members of the community can use the online form to report "Students of Concern," the website's guidance indicates that this is not the primary purpose of the reporting tool.Harvard does have a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/careteam/process/">Student of Concern</a> page, but no online report form. Members of the community can refer students by emailing the Care Team.

On June 10, 2020, Harvard University President, Lawrence Bacow, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.harvard.edu/president/news/2020/hupd-statement-from-president-bacow/">issued a statement</a> in which he said, "Black lives matter, and we must use this moment to confront and remedy racial injustice." Bacow's first official statement after the murder of George Floyd, issued on May 30, 2020, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2020/06/08/searching-meaningful-response-college-leaders-killing-george-floyd">was widely criticized</a> for not centering the Black community.A student says, "This is lip service, mind you - As a black student, my teachers, advisors, and residential tutors made it abundantly clear that I did not matter to them."

U.S. News ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) 2nd in its 2025 national rankings, which is the same position that MIT held last year.In 2024, MIT created an <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://cdn.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=63aebd5a9a8c41afb00c5fdc9b6dd49a">online accessibility map</a> using ArcGIS.

MIT does not offer a Disability Studies program, but its Anthropology and Women's and Gender Studies programs regularly offer <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://student.mit.edu/catalog/search.cgi?search=disability&amp;style=verbatim">classes covering disability</a>, including WGS.278J, Topics in Critical Disability Studies; and WGS.137J, Intersectionality, Neurodiversity, and Disability.

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.chronicle.com/article/tracking-higher-eds-dismantling-of-dei">MIT recently</a> "closed its Community and Equity Office; eliminated a senior administrative position in the office; and eliminated required diversity statements in faculty hiring." MIT's student newspaper, The Tech, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://thetech.com/2025/05/29/kornbluth-launches-understanding-mit">reported in May</a> that MIT's website and other public communications increasingly use language that appears to kowtow to the Trump administration and its anti-DEI position. For example, MIT's “<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://understanding.mit.edu/merit-and-excellence">Merit and Excellence</a>” page boasts that "MIT was first to reinstate the SAT as a requirement for undergraduate applications and eliminated DEI statements in faculty hiring." The page also highlights how MIT has implemented more severe disciplinary measures against student protesters, including "probation, full suspensions, and/or bans from campus."

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

MIT does not offer adaptive sports, but its <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.mitrecsports.com/work-out/open-recreation/">Adaptive Recreation Program</a> offers some adaptive equipment, including accessible gym equipment and equipment for adaptive swimming.<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://calendar.mit.edu/group/disabledmit">Disabled@MIT</a> is an active student affinity group on campus. Recent events include paint nights, game nights, and movie screenings.In 2022, graduate students in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning organized the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://dusp.mit.edu/projects/disability-justice-and-planning">SA+P Disability and Planning Initiative</a> "to challenge planners and designers to radically rethink approaches to inclusivity in our cities and built environments."

U.S. News ranked Princeton University the top university in the nation in 2025, as it did in 2024.A campus accessibility audit conducted by <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/princeton-dorms-buildings-campus-accessibility">The Daily Princetonian</a> in 2023 reveals that just over half of all buildings on campus are wheelchair accessible. In 2022, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2022/11/inaccessible-campus-disability-change">a student wrote in an op-ed</a>, "This is one of the most under-recognized, yet widely experienced, aspects of discrimination at Princeton." Princeton hired its first <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/04/princeton-university-accessibility-building-design">Director of Campus Accessibility</a> in 2023, making Princeton <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/princeton-michael-barnes-inaugural-director-of-campus-accessibility">the first Ivy League university</a> "to have a full-time staff member dedicated to issues of physical access."There are numerous other initiatives that Princeton has undertaken in recent years to improve accessibility. Last year, Princeton installed accessibility guides around campus and <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2024/10/princeton-news-adpol-accessibility-guide-map-buildings-accessable">partnered with AccessAble</a> to create an interactive online map that indicates the locations of accessible entrances and facilities. In 2021, Princeton's Program in Linguistics began offering a sequence in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/princeton-american-sign-language-linguistics-classes">American Sign Language</a> (ASL), which "allows students to learn ASL while being exposed to Deaf culture and studies," and fulfills the undergraduate language requirement. That same year, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2021/09/tigeraccess-disability-transit-service-transportation-princeton-parking-accessibility">Princeton launched TigerAccess</a>, a van which "offers curb-to-curb transportation for University visitors, students, and faculty members with mobility-related disabilities or medical conditions." In 2025, Princeton increased the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://paw.princeton.edu/article/passing-time-between-classes-extended-15-20-minutes">passing time</a> between classes to 15 minutes, which was partly in response to <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/08/princeton-opinion-disability-access-personal-electric-vehicle-restriction">negative feedback</a> from the disability community when scooters were banned on campus in 2023.

<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/ods-accessible-student-experiences-office-of-disability-services-princeton-university">A student tells The Daily Princetonian</a>, “Although I’m allowed to miss class, there is no requirement for the professors to accommodate me any further, so when there is no recording of the class, no class slides, and no notes to look over, it is very difficult to catch up.”

Princeton has recently started to offer a few courses on disability topics, including "WRI 165: Disability Justice," but there is no formal curriculum in Disability Studies.

Princeton's Program in Linguistics also offers an upper-level sequence in <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/princeton-american-sign-language-linguistics-classes">American Sign Language</a> (ASL), which "allows students to learn ASL while being exposed to Deaf culture and studies," and fulfills the undergraduate language requirement. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://registrar.princeton.edu/course-offerings/course-details?term=1232&amp;courseid=016358">LIN 215</a>, American Deaf Culture, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/princeton-american-sign-language-linguistics-classes">examines</a> "Deaf literature and art, as well as political and ethical issues facing Deaf people."

On February 20, 2025, The Daily Princetonian <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2025/02/princeton-news-adpol-dei-websites-princeton-largely-remain">reported</a> that sections of the university's website dedicated to addressing systemic racism at Princeton were taken down. The website of the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://odi.princeton.edu/">Office of Diversity &amp;&nbsp;Inclusion</a> remains up. However, it's not clear what kind of programming and supports are still being offered to the community. For example, the events page <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://odi.princeton.edu/events-0">is empty</a>.

Princeton University

Princeton's campus does not have a Disability Cultural Center though the Office of Disability Services (ODS) runs the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://ods.princeton.edu/accessability">AccessAbility Center</a>, "an inclusive gathering space where students can study, relax, and learn about ability and difference."The Program in Gender and Sexuality Studies (GSS) at Princeton runs the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gss.princeton.edu/disability-debility-and-crip-theory-working-group">Disability, Debility, and Crip Theory Working Group</a> for "graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and researchers, as well as faculty members."The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.facebook.com/princetondisabilitycollective/">Princeton Disability Collective</a>, a student org, doesn't appear to be active.Undergraduate students run the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://princetonpeernightline.com/">Princeton Peer Nightline</a>, a helpline for students. (Peer support is a vital element of disability community, established by the early disability rights movement and the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley.)

According to an accessibility audit <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.dailyprincetonian.com/article/2023/03/princeton-dorms-buildings-campus-accessibility">conducted by The Daily Princetonian</a> in 2023, only 92 of 170 campus buildings (just over 50%) are wheelchair accessible, and 17 buildings are completely inaccessible, including nine residential halls. Furthermore, "less than half of all dorm buildings, or 26 out of 53, are wheelchair-accessible on all levels."

Last year it was tied with Harvard for 3rd place.A student says, "There is not really a Disability culture on campus and therefore a lot of folks just aren't aware. One very obvious case is having Professors and supervisors press more with questions asking for a diagnosis when I request accommodations or let them know about my preferred ways of working or communicating."<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://disability.stanford.edu/">Disability @ Stanford</a> was launched in 2017 by The Stanford Disability Initiative, "a coalition of students, faculty, and staff who aim to push forward the ongoing need for access rights and disability equity at Stanford University through community-building and academic scholarship." Stanford's website offers the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://maps.stanford.edu/ada/">Campus Access Guide</a>, an interactive accessibility map, but some of the features appear to be broken. In 2024, The Stanford Daily <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://stanforddaily.com/2024/03/15/94-of-elevators-on-campus-have-expired-permits/">reported</a> that 260 (or 94%) of the 274 elevators on campus had expired permits, and broken elevators belied much of the promised accessibility on campus. One student, who lived on the third floor of a residential complex, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://stanforddaily.com/2024/03/15/94-of-elevators-on-campus-have-expired-permits/">told The Daily</a> that "Sometimes I would just stay in my room instead of going [downstairs], because it was hard to get up and down [the stairs] so many times."<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://stanforddaily.com/2022/02/09/stanford-disability-community-space-celebrates-a-long-awaited-opening/">Approximately 19% of students</a> at Stanford are registered with the Office of Accessible Education. In 2022, The Stanford Daily published <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://stanforddaily.com/2022/04/22/community-voices-mental-health-at-stanford/">an unsettling compilation of comments</a> by members of the community on their struggles with mental health at Stanford. One sophomore wrote, “Mental health at Stanford is an afterthought. The administration’s neglect is single-handedly responsible for my breakdown. I spent 45 minutes on hold with CAPS during an emergency trying to get help before my parents rushed to get me.”In 2019, Stanford settled a class-action lawsuit with Disability Rights Advocates for its “egregious” policies that coerced students experiencing mental health crises into taking leaves of absence. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.chronicle.com/article/stanfords-new-policy-for-student-mental-health-crises-is-hailed-as-a-model/">According to reporting</a> by the Chronicle of Higher Education, “students said they had been falsely accused by administrators of disrupting the lives of their friends and had generally been treated as if they had committed behavioral infractions rather than simply asking for treatment, in an appropriate manner, for their disabilities during times of crisis.” One student told the reporter that, in recent years, students who were hospitalized for psychiatric treatment would “effectively disappear from campus.”Stanford has a student-run <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://web.stanford.edu/group/bridge/">peer counseling center</a> open 24 hours.

Lecture recordings can be requested by students <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/11gs3w9tUc_28UyAKrPHIUcbkp0ZqrOWjH2SirrGwYEA/edit">with approved accommodations</a> from the Office of Accessible Education.

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://disability.stanford.edu/academic-scholarship/disability-studies">Academic Scholarship Committee</a> says it is currently working to build a Disability Studies program at Stanford.

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://disability.stanford.edu/academic-scholarship/disability-studies">Stanford Disability Initiative</a> has been trying to establish a Disability Studies Program at Stanford for several years. As yet, there is no formal program at Stanford. Stanford does offer a few <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://explorecourses.stanford.edu/search?q=disability&amp;view=catalog&amp;academicYear=&amp;page=0&amp;filter-coursestatus-Active=on&amp;filter-academiclevel-UG=on&amp;collapse=,2,6,7,8,3,5,">disability-focused courses</a>, including AFRICAAM 244, Re(positioning) Disability: Historical, Cultural, and Social Lenses; ENGLISH 185B, Mad Fiction: Literature of Mental Illness; and ETHICSOC 104X, Introduction to Disability Studies and Disability Rights.

On February 13, 2025, The Stanford Daily <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://stanforddaily.com/2025/02/13/dei-removal-from-web-pages/">reported that</a> "Stanford has significantly reduced the content on its Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access in a Learning Environment (IDEAL) and DiversityWorks websites — which featured information describing and supporting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts — since January."

Stanford overtly stigmatizes neurodivergence by presenting <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://safety.stanford.edu/threat-concern/warning-signs">a list of ambiguous behaviors</a> as warning signs of imminent violence, including “Bizarre behavior" and “Social isolation." These words are often used as code for autism, especially in males.

The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://icil.stanford.edu/icil-programs/disability-community-disco-space">Disability Community (DisCo) Space</a> is Stanford's lite version of a Disability Cultural Center, which has been running since 2022. A student says, "It is technically a 'Disability Community Space' as they did not want to fund it at the level of the other cultural/community centers on campus."There are several active student groups on campus, including the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="http://instagram.com/stanforddisabilityalliance">Stanford Disability Alliance</a> (SDA) and the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.instagram.com/stanford_asl_club/">Stanford ASL Club</a>.The <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://web.stanford.edu/group/bridge/">Bridge Peer Counseling Center</a>, a student-run "general peer counseling, workshop, and support center for Stanford University and the surrounding area," has been open since 1971! Peer support was established as a core component of independent living in the community during the early disability rights movement.

In 2021, the Editorial Board of The Stanford Daily <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://stanforddaily.com/2021/04/15/editorial-board-stanford-needs-to-better-serve-the-disability-community/">reported</a> that, "Stanford should address the ways that on-campus housing currently exacerbates social exclusion for students with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act does not require dorm spaces outside of “social spaces,” like lounges, to comply with its accessibility guidelines. The lack of elevators in the vast majority of multi-story all freshman dorms — with the exception of those located in Florence Moore Hall — and all row houses attests to this distinction. But campus social life is often concentrated in these spaces — dorm rooms and shared spaces above and even below the ground floor — excising disabled students from key components of the student social experience."

In 2020, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.ems1.com/mental-health/articles/stanford-students-on-psychiatric-hold-will-now-be-transported-by-ems-not-campus-police-efHIQzmLtu2LJ4gh/">Stanford announced</a> that students would be transported to the ER by the fire department rather than campus police. San Mateo County launched a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://gardnercenter.stanford.edu/project/evaluating-community-wellness-and-crisis-response-team-pilot-program">co-response</a> pilot program in 2021. Co-response is not the same as alternative-to-police response. Co-response models involve a clinician responding in tandem with police, while alternative-to-response models recognize the harms caused by police interactions, and therefore call for less policing.

On April 20, 2021, after a Minneapolis police officer was found guilty for the murder of George Floyd, the president of Stanford, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://news.stanford.edu/report/2021/04/20/the-verdict-in-minneapolis/">issued the following statement</a>: "First, to our Black community at Stanford, I want to say: Your lives matter, and your voices matter."
